What is the difference between hot press and cold press watercolour paper?
The difference between hot press and cold press watercolour paper lies in their surface texture and absorbency. Cold press watercolour paper has a slightly textured surface, which is more absorbent and dries quickly. This texture allows the paint to granulate and flow in the dips, grooves, and irregularities of the paper, creating a characteristic look associated with watercolour artwork.
Hot press watercolour paper, on the other hand, has a smooth surface that is less absorbent and allows for more time to adjust the paint while drying. This type of paper is better suited for fine detail work, as it handles ink, pens, and penciled details better than cold press paper.
Additionally, hot press paper tends to produce more vivid colours and is less prone to lifting and alteration of the paint once it has dried.
Advantages to using Hot Press Watercolour Paper:
Hot press watercolour paper offers artists a smooth surface for detailed work, vibrant colours, easy corrections, and versatility for mixed media applications.
Smooth Surface: Hot press paper has a smooth surface with very little texture, making it ideal for painting in greater detail and achieving precise brushwork.
Vivid Colours: Due to its less absorbent nature, hot press paper allows paint to sit longer on the surface, resulting in more vivid and bright colours compared to cold press paper.
Precise Brush Detail: The smooth surface of hot press paper is well-suited for handling ink, pens, and detailed brushwork, making it a preferred choice for artists who require precision in their artwork.
Easy Corrections: Paint on hot press paper can be easily lifted off even after drying, allowing for quick corrections and adjustments during the painting process.
Versatility for Mixed Media: Hot press paper is suitable for combining watercolour with other mediums like graphite, pen, or ink, making it a versatile option for artists working with mixed media techniques.
