Tips and tricks for carving lino:

Always carve away from your hands and body to avoid cutting yourself. Hold the lino block securely with your non-cutting hand.
Use a non-slip mat or surface underneath the lino block to prevent it from moving around while you’re carving.
Heat the lino gently before carving to make it more pliable and easier to work with, but don’t overheat it or it will warp.
Invest in quality, sharp lino cutting tools rather than cheap, dull ones which can be dangerous and produce poor results.
Try different shaped gouges (V-shaped, U-shaped, etc.) to achieve various mark-making effects in your design.
Regularly sharpen your tools using a sharpening stone or leather honing block to maintain a keen edge.
Take regular test prints of your carving progress using a brayer and ink to check your design and make adjustments as needed.
When carving intricate details, work in one direction first, then turn the block and carve the other way for a more consistent result.
Use a ruler to score a line on the lino first before snapping it to get a clean, straight edge when cutting the block to size.
Apply a thin layer of white watercolour paint over the surface of the lino before carving to create better contrast and visibility of your cuts.
