Prismacolor Premier Blender Pencil

  • Prismacolor colourless blender pencils are ideal for artists looking to enhance their coloured pencil artwork
  • They blend in the same way colour pencils do, as they contain the same wax and binder, but no pigment is added
  • The result is a multi-faceted tool that allows artists to accomplish several effects, like merging neighboring colours, softening edges, and creating unique colour blends
  • Ombre Effect - Create a shading effect by overlapping your colours using the pencil blender over the entire coloured section. Drawing in circular or oval patterns keeps hard lines from forming when you first apply colour, allowing blending to be more successful
  • Burnishing - Although it’s tempting to apply heavy pressure in order to drive layers of pigment together, it leaves your drawing with a waxy buildup. Using light pressure instead allows you more control over the amount of wax the blender leaves behind
  • The sharper the better - Keeping your blender tip sharpened will naturally make you use less pressure in order to avoid breaking the tip. If you must use heavy pressure, use a worn pencil that allows you to burnish with greater force. Always take caution not to tear the paper
  • Colour first, then blend - It’s best to lay down all your colour first and then blend. The more times you try to blend and then colour, the more stubborn each additional application of pigment will be because every time you blend, you force more colour into the tooth
  • Pack of 2 pencils

Colour Blending Tips

The human eye can distinguish over 10 million colours.
However, most artists don’t own 10 million coloured pencils. So how can you achieve a specific colour when you don’t have the exact shade coloured pencil within reach?
Blending different shades of coloured pencils together is a great way to create unique and customized colours.
It’s also a great way to add lifelike detail to artwork, as everyday objects are not just one solid colour, they feature subtle colour variation, shadows and highlights. Blending a base colour is the perfect way to capture those nuances and make the object as realistic as possible.

When blending colours with Prismacolor Premier Soft Core Coloured Pencils, it can be helpful to employ a technique known as burnishing. Burnishing involves layering different shades of coloured pencils using heavy pressure. When burnishing, try layering a colour that is lighter on top of a darker colour in order to achieve optimal results.

Be sure to clean the tips of the lighter coloured pencils before highlighting on top of darker colours. This will prevent the coloured pencil from transferring the colour to another area.
Keep in mind that it may be helpful to go back over the layered colours with a Prismacolor Premier Blender Pencil to smooth out edges and transitions. Try a white coloured pencil if your collection lacks a blender pencil to achieve a similar effect.

Don’t forget to use a piece of paper under the hand you are colouring with to prevent sweat and grease from smearing the colour, or your hand! Colouring with your hand resting directly on the surface can result in unwanted smudging or transferring of colours that can ruin your creation.
